Sixteen

It was the first time Daniel had laid eyes on his flat since being chased from his bed in the dead of night. He lingered near the quad entrance, shoulders tense, surveying the area. Rees kept close to his side, quiet and observant of their surroundings.

“It looks safe,” Daniel murmured.

Surely, it was ridiculous to think the police cared about one man so much that they would station an officer there for more than a night or two, but Daniel wasn’t confident enough in that assumption to be comfortable staying there. Still, it was quiet now, and he was desperate to get inside and retrieve some of his things. Letting out a breath in the cold morning air, he ventured into the courtyard, fishing the key from his pocket.

The first thing he noticed was that his wagon was missing from its place near the stables. It would not have been difficult for someone to see it sitting there for days on end and decide to help themselves to it. Daniel swore inwardly. One more obstacle in his path to getting back to work.

“What is it?” Rees asked.

“Wagon’s gone,” he grumbled, unlocking the door and slipping inside.

Rees followed, lingering near the front window with his attention focused outside in case their entrance drew attention. “It was stolen?”

“More than likely, yes.”

“That friend of mine owns one. I could ask him to bring it?”

He sighed. More charity he would owe people for, but what choice did he have?

The previous night, he’d finally caved and agreed to accept Rees’s help—and the help of this friend of his. Daniel’s savings were depleted, and his level of desperation was rising. They were due at the cemetery the following night, and Daniel couldn’t recall ever feeling so underprepared for a job. No wagon, an unfamiliar team, and himself—completely off-kilter, struggling to maintain coherent thought. Mornings were the worst. He never quite felt as though he’d slept off his medicine properly.

To Rees’s question, Daniel only grunted a response as he busied himself going through his drawers for clothes. He pulled on his overcoat, grateful to feel properly warm for the first time in weeks. He packed everything he could fit into his bag, not knowing when he’d have the opportunity to come back—or if his landlord would even allow him to. If he did not have money for rent in two weeks, he’d be losing this place for good.

He paused then, looking over at Rees. “Has Walker lost his flat, do you think?”

Rees turned from the window. “Not yet. Another week, his landlord said.”

“You’ve been?”

“Yes, a few days after you first told me he got taken in. I wanted to ensure anything of importance was got out of there.”

“Smart lad.” Daniel hiked the bag over his shoulder. “All right, let’s get out of here. I’ve got what I need.”

As they slipped back into the frigid morning and crossed the courtyard, a voice somewhat familiar to Daniel called from an adjoining building, “Is that you, Mr Barker?”

He stilled and turned
